about

This song is a reflection on the life of a real person that lived at the motel for many years. He was a brilliant lawyer, a kleptomaniac, a Vietnam War Vet (piloting cargo planes), and suffered from severe PTSD

The newspaper mountains were real, they covered his room and filled his wood panel station wagon

lyrics

I’ve been scrambling—yeah
Up all night, left-handed,
Trying to write these briefs for days
So I ramble on now
Tied up in litigation
Telephone wires line my cage
…and I can’t stand it.
Give me a little more time.
My defense is wearing thin…
I know it, but I can’t leave now
Living at the Inn, we begin to grow again
Watching rainbows from the Ottoman
Dense green shrubbery and some apple trees
I have always loved you, will you remember me?
……will you remember me?
They say “it’s over”
And you want to sing along
They say “it’s over”
And you wake up!
Ever since I left Hanoi, boy
Part of me was stranded--
Feeling napalm day and night
No one will ever find me
In these newspaper mountains
There are too many enemies
…and I can’t stand it
Give me a little more time.
My defense is wearing thin…
I know it, but I can’t leave now
They say “it’s over”
And you want to sing along
They say “it’s over”
And you wake up!
Living at the Inn, we begin to grow again
Watching rainbows from the Ottoman

Dense green shrubbery and some apple trees
I have always loved you, will you remember me?
……will you remember me?
